lyrics

Well, there’s a red glow over the desert that’s lighting up the sky.
A pick-up truck parked not too close and two old friends nearby.
When the flames light up their faces there’s a tear in every eye.
The sun went down a long time ago and again when the fire died.

And they’re saying goodbye to a friend.
Someone who changed all their lives.
And I never knew him.
They said he had crazy eyes.

Well, he played a guitar, and he sang a bit with his special lady friend
He’d hit the bottle just a bit too hard, but it seemed he’d always mend
‘Cos he was young and rich and gifted with a voice could make you cry
But he rode his boat too far from shore. He never got home that night.

So what have we given and what have we taken?
What would we try again?
Who have we loved and who have we lost?
Who can we call our friends?
The fire’s burned out the sun’s climbing high.
The pick-up’s headed for home
And out on the desert a smiling young singer
Knows that he’s not alone.
